Accenti queruli spiegate all'aure, o augelleti, garuli, com'io lamenti,
In plaintive accents spread forth on the breezes, o loquacious birds, how I lament;
Caldi sospiri vital, del cor respire, vital, mando dal seno ai venti,
Warm and vital sighs from a breathing heart I send from my breast to the winds;
Miei sospir, miei respire, o miei lamenti.
My sighs, my breath, o my lamentations!
Andare languidi nel duol soliciti, alla mia Lidia,
Go then, languishing, painfully pleading to my Lydia,
dite ch'io spiro, dite ch'io moro, pien di martiro, senza fatal ristoro.
Tell her I'm sighing, tell her I'm dying, full of pain without vital relief.
Che forse placida, qual pria furigida ai pianti a gemiti,
Perhaps mollified, who once was impervious to my cries and moans,
Vi dara pace, vi dara vita,
She will give you comfort, she will give you life.
Ne piu si audace, dira: "Non merta aita, ma, all'audace in amor do pace e vita"
No longer so bold, she will say "You are not worthy of help, but, to the bold in love, I give comfort and life"
"Ch'in squardo rigido bellezze angeliche furo dell'anima trasse l'ardore,
"to him who, with a heartless glance, with angelic beauty ravished my soul,
Squarcio'l bel velo, rubbo l'honore con finto zelo, o mio ardor, o mio honor, squarciato velo."
Drew forth my passion; sundered my fair veil and stole my honour with feigned ardor, O my passion, o the torn veil of my honour!"
